About the Department

Our Mission

The Department of Nursing supports the mission of UCSF Medical Center and UCSF Children’s Hospital: Caring, Healing, Teaching, Discovering. The primary focus of the department is the delivery of high quality, comprehensive professional nursing care in a cost-effective manner. The California Nursing Practice Act and the American Nurses Association Nursing Scope and Standards of Practice provide the framework for nursing practice.

Our Philosophy

We, the professional nurses at UCSF Medical Center and UCSF Children’s Hospital are committed to:

  • Compassionate care and advocacy for all patients, families and the community.
  • Excellence in nursing care delivery that is grounded in a holistic approach to the patient and family, acknowledging that their individual responses are influenced by culture, religion, ethnicity and lifestyle.
  • Taking responsibility for assessing, developing, implementing and evaluating evidence based multidisciplinary care, incorporating patient and family values and preferences.
  • Integrating ethics with interpersonal, intellectual and technical skills in providing evidence based comprehensive care to patients.

Based on the philosophy of nursing, the goals of the Department of Nursing, consistent with the Nursing Strategic Plan, are to:

  • Strategically invest in innovative programs to optimize patient safety.
  • Continuously improve quality of care in a cost-effective manner
  • Meet or exceed the established target for patient satisfaction in all nurse-sensitive aspects of patient satisfaction measures.
  • Increase efficiency and cost-effectiveness while achieving exceptional clinical quality and service performance.
  • Achieve recognition as a Center of Excellence in clinical innovation, evidence-based practice, and nursing research.
  • Establish UCSF as an employer of choice in the Bay Area and nationally recognized as a premier place to practice professional nursing.
  • Recruit and retain a diverse workforce and demonstrate the development of cultural competence in professional nursing staff.
