Parnassus Campus - Mt. Zion Campus

Neurology / Neurosurgery / Neuro Spine
Neurology / Neurosurgery / Neuro Spine is a 36-bed unit located on the 8th floor of Long Hospital. This state-of-the-art unit excels in offering exciting interventions for rapidly growing neuroscience services including neurology, neurosurgery and interventional radiology. Specialized care is available through the monitoring of patients with uncontrolled seizures for the discovery of the best treatment options. Here you will find abundant opportunities to develop specialty skills.

Transplant
The Kidney, Pancreas, Liver Transplant unit on the 9th floor of Long Hospital is a complex 30 bed adult surgical unit. Organs are obtained from cadavers, as well as living related and altruistic donors. Within this unit you will find interdisciplinary coordination with teams of physicians, nurses, social workers, nutritionists, pharmacists and physical therapists. In addition there are opportunities to teach and participate in ground-breaking research. UCSF Medical Center surgeons currently perform the second highest volume of kidney transplants in the world!

Hematology / Oncology / Bone Marrow Transplant
The Adult Hematology/Oncology/Peripheral Blood Stem Cell Transplant unit is a 34-bed unit that provides expert and compassionate care to cancer patients. The nurses are part of an interdisciplinary team, which includes physicians, clinical pharmacists, social workers, and nutritionists. On this unit the nurses are highly trained in multiple treatment modalities including chemotherapy, immunotherapy, radiation therapy, and peripheral stem cell/bone marrow transplant. The nursing care is patient and family-centered. The staff encourages patient and family participation in symptom management and patient education throughout the various stages of the patient’s treatment and recovery. In addition, this unit provides nurses with many opportunities for professional development and education.

Acute Hemodialysis (AHU)

AHU TeamThis unit performs more than just acute dialysis for renal failure patients; it also provides a wide array of therapeutic pheresis procedures to both children and adults. Examples of these procedures includes plasma exchange, platelet depletion, leukodepletion, and red blood cell exchange. In addition, AHU also performs stem cell collection to be used in the treatment of conditions such as myeloma and non-Hodgkins lymphoma. Patients in acute renal failure may be transported to AHU for dialysis or the staff of AHU may bring the hemodialysis machine to the patient's bedside. The majority of our staff nurses come to us with a variety of critical care backgrounds, bringing acute assessment and critical thinking skills to the care of this diverse patient population. In 2004, the last year for which we have complete data, we provided a total of 4540 treatments in need.

General surgery; Orthopedics
There are two surgery units on the Parnassus campus. On the 12th floor of Long Hospital, is a 36-bed general surgery unit . This is a fast paced unit that provides care for patients undergoing non-spine orthopedic, abdominal and complex plastic surgical procedures. Patients undergoing ground breaking, minimally invasive hip replacement surgery are cared for on this unit as well. The patient population on this unit offers the staff a wealth of learning opportunities, many involving cutting edge therapies. This unit focuses on excellence, compassion, best practices and teamwork, making the potential for personal and career empowerment endless.

On the 13th floor of Long Hospital is a newly reconstructed 32-bed adult general & specialty Surgery unit. This is a fast paced post-surgical unit that provides care for patients undergoing complex abdominal, Oral, Head & Neck (OHNS) and urological procedures. The patient population on this unit offers the staff a wealth of learning opportunities, many involving cutting edge therapies. This unit focuses on excellence, compassion, best practices, technological innovations and teamwork.

Medicine
Adult Medicine is a 34-bed acute-care unit that cares for medicine patients who range in age from young adults to the elderly. This is a fast paced medicine unit whose nurses exemplify teamwork. Patients present with a wide variety of diagnoses including acute exacerbations of complex chronic conditions with a focus on pulmonary, gastrointestinal, med-psych and endocrine components. This Medicine unit includes an innovative palliative care service, with trained staff and multidisciplinary resources. An Elder Life Program integrates evidence-based geriatric practices through collaboration and teaching. This unit offers nurses the opportunity to develop a strong foundation upon which to build a lifelong nursing career.

Clinical research
The GCRC is an inpatient and outpatient research unit that provides the clinical research support for UCSF investigators who study human physiology, disease processes and how to treat those disease processes with innovative approaches. The GCRC is funded by the National Institute for Health (NIH) and the National Center for Research Resources. As the designated Clinical Research Center for the Parnassus Campus, the GCRC is open to the schools of medicine, pharmacy, nursing and dentistry to provide resources for clinical research patients. It includes the main 11-bed unit in Moffitt Hospital, a metabolic research kitchen, laboratories, an outpatient facility at Mount Zion Hospital, an exercise physiology lab and a new Informatics Center.
