Medicine/Surgery ICU
The Medical-Surgical ICU is a community of skilled, innovative, collaborative and caring critical care clinicians. We are a tertiary referral center and take care of complex critically ill and injured patients. We have an active nursing leadership group and Clinical Nurse Specialist who provide mentorship and coaching to new and experienced staff. We have an incredibly diverse staff that reflects the many cultures of or patient population. Our supportive team environment is the essential key to our success in providing excellent care to our patients and their families.

The ICU team cares for critically ill patients with complex medical disorders as well as post-operative general surgical, solid organ transplant and orthopedic patients. Nurses in this unit develop expertise in caring for patients with ARDS/ALI, acute kidney injury, end-stage and acute liver failure, severe sepsis and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome, and those with liver, pancreas and/or small bowel transplantation.

The critical care team includes nurses, physicians, respiratory care practitioners, a social worker, a nutritionist, and a pharmacist all with expertise in meeting the needs of critically ill patients and their families. The nursing staff is active in improving the care of critically ill patients through innovative projects and clinical research.

We use the following principles to guide high quality care to our patients and families:

  • Knowledge & Competence
  • Compassionate Care
  • True Collaboration & Teamwork
  • Patient & Family Centered Care
  • Professional Integrity

Intensive Cardiac Care
The 16 bed Intensive Cardiac Care (ICC) unit provides comprehensive hospital care for critically ill adults being treated primarily for cardiac disorders, including cardiac medicine, cardiothoracic surgery, transplant (heart, lung, heart and lung), thoracic or vascular surgery. Other patients who have life-threatening medical or surgical conditions may also receive care in the ICC.

Patient care involves a multi-disciplinary team whose members work together to meet the physical, mental and psychosocial needs of each patient and family. In addition to physicians and nurses, the team includes staff from respiratory therapy, physical therapy, social work, pharmacy, nutrition and pastoral care. As part of our patient and family focused care, we strive to include the personal and cultural values of patients and their families in the plan of care.

Neuro Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
This 21-bed intensive care unit is one of the largest and most sophisticated neurosurgical/neurological facilities in the nation. This highly specialized unit provides quality care to critically ill adult, neurologically impaired patients who undergo a variety of complex surgical procedures and interventional treatments. In addition, the unit provides care and support for patients and families going through the organ donation process. The UCSF Neuro ICU is a fast-paced, high-acuity unit where attention is focused on close monitoring of the patient's neurological status. The diversity of the patients offer the NICU nurse daily opportunities for professional growth, satisfaction, and challenge. Education and staff development is a unit priority. We strongly support new graduate and experienced nurses to ensure they have the necessary resources and skills to be successful and work safely in this extraordinary environment. Working with this patient population is a truly a satisfying experience!

The interdisciplinary team consists of neurologists, neurosurgeons, critical care medicine physicians, registered nurses, nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, pharmacists, patient care assistants, unit secretaries, respiratory therapists, physical, occupational ,and speech therapists, dietitian, and social workers to name a few.

The Neuro ICU is fortunate to be composed of a group of dedicated and knowledgeable health care professionals who are passionate about their practice.
