Perioperative Care
Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC)
The Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC), located on the Parnassus campus, is an out-patient surgery center for adult and pediatric patients undergoing surgical or diagnostic procedures. Patients treated here are in good general health. After their surgery or procedure, they can either be safely discharged home or transferred to the inpatient setting for overnight observation.
The ASC is divided into two separate but dependent areas - the Operating Room (OR) and the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU). The Center currently operates Monday through Friday, from 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., or until the last patient is either discharged home or transferred to an inpatient bed. Staff members work together to care for, educate and support the patients and families receive care, and are sensitive to their ethnic and social background. Technical knowledge and personalized care are blended together to meet the pre-, intra-, and post-operative needs of each patient.
Nurses working in the ASC will circulate and scrub for a wide variety of surgeries and related procedures. Because of the fast pace and rapid turnover of patients, ASC nurses must be able to quickly establish rapport with patients and family members while they assess their patients, plan the care, implement the plan, and reassess with vigilance
After the procedures are completed, patients are recovered in the PACU. The ASC PACU nurses assure the safe recovery of the patient and appropriate discharge and follow-up.
