Emergency Department
The newly renovated 29-bed Level II Emergency Department, offers a spacious state-of-the-art environment. Here medical, nursing, and other highly skilled personnel manage patients with complex diseases and emergent diagnoses, patients that often require interventions that can only be found at an academic medical center like UCSF.
In addition to providing care to emergently ill and injured patients, our Fast-Trak Program, staffed by nurse practitioners and physician assistants, offers efficient care for non-urgent illnesses and injuries. With our own departmental x-ray and CT, we can provide prompt diagnoses and interventions for our patients. We also work collaboratively with first-responders and transport providers to support prehospital care for patients throughout the City and County of San Francisco.
UCSF’s Emergency Department offers challenging and rewarding careers. We place equally high value on service excellence, critical thinking, and unit-specific skills. We offer a 12-week extensive Emergency Department Training Program suitable for both new graduate RNs and those seeking to change their practice specialty. The program includes class time, skills lab training, and supervised clinical practice with RN preceptors dedicated to mentoring your clinical experience in a world- class emergency/specialized patient care environment. We also offer training preceptorships to interested and qualified RN’s who want to experience new challenges and responsibilities in the ED, and our nurses can avail themselves of the wide variety of courses offered through our Nursing continuing education program.
We offer rotating 12-hour shifts to provide maximum coverage during our busiest times; most staff work 2 or 3 of these shifts weekly.
We support our RN staff with dedicated Emergency Department technicians, a full time Clinical Nurse Specialist, and administrative personnel.
