Perioperative Care

Intraoperative Care

RN in OR with medical suppliesAs a teaching and research hospital, UCSF ORs and surgeons use numerous advanced, state-of-the-art techniques, and as a result, patients are referred here from throughout the country and the world for care they can receive nowhere else. Surgeries are performed on patients of all ages, including fetal surgeries.

Surgeries are performed on both the Parnassus and Mt. Zion campuses. At the Parnassus campus (the Moffit-Long ORs), there are 22 ORs including two designated pediatric operating rooms with their own pediatric induction area and a pediatric PACU as part of the Children Surgery Center. The different surgical specialties on this campus include cardio-thoracic (heart/chest) surgery, ophthalmology (eye), otorhinolaryngology (ear/nose/throat), maxillofacial (face/jaws) surgery, plastic surgery, general surgery, gynecology, genitourinary (reproductive/excretory systems) surgery, neurosurgery, orthopedics (bones/joints), pediatrics, transplant surgery, and vascular surgery. The Mount Zion ORs (number??) perform procedures that tend to fall into the following specialties: OHNS (otolaryngology, head, and neck), general, GYN, orthopedics, plastics, genitourinary, and general GYN, as well as OHNS and GU oncological surgery. On the Mt. Zion campus, surgery is limited to patients six years of age and over.

OR nurses are primarily responsible for ensuring the safe intra-operative care of their patients. They may either circulate or scrub in variety of cases, learning to develop an individualized plan of care for each patient that reflects the patients’ age, cognitive skills, ethnic, cultural, and social diversity. Due to the complexity of our patients and the procedures they undergo, we encourage nurses to develop an area of specialization within the OR, at the same time offering opportunities for staff to learn and grow both within their chose specialty and, as the opportunity arises, to explore new areas if interest.
