Research Units - Clinical Research Centers

Adult - Pediatric

The UCSF Medical Center and UCSF Children’s Hospital clinical research units are part of UCSF Clinical Translational Science Institute (CTSI), a National Institute of Health initiative to expedite the translation of basic science into clinical care. The primary goal of this National Institutes of Health (NIH) program is to provide investigators with an infrastructure for clinical research. These units provide inpatient and outpatient research facilities to foster the identification of clinical disorders, their biochemical mechanisms and the application of that knowledge to prevent, treat and cure a broad spectrum of human illnesses. They resemble a miniature research hospital within a large hospital providing specialized resources such as specially trained research nurses; biostatisticians; database design consultation, computer hardware and software systems personnel and material for data management & analysis; nutritional consultation with fully equipped metabolic kitchen; exercise physiology laboratory; pediatric developmental psychologist; and sophisticated laboratories vital for outstanding research.

Clinical Research Center - Adult

The 12 Moffitt Clinical Research Center features a renovated state-of-the-art research unit. There are 10 inpatient beds and an outpatient suite designed to enhance the research capability of the CRC. Careful thought was given to the creation of a healing environment for our patients and families as well as staff. Unique design features include a customized sound system to decrease institutional noise, wood tones, soft lighting, murals and artwork.

Collaboration with the UCSF School of Nursing has resulted in an increase in the quality and quantity of nursing research proposals on the Center. Our CRC has been fortunate to be selected to provide the infrastructure for two new programs on campus, the Center of Excellence in Women's Health and the Osher Center for Integrative Medicine, which adds complementary, alternative and integrative treatment protocols that address all aspects of health and wellness.

The current nursing staff of 28 members has created a unique position, “Clinical Nurse Coordinator” to aid in ensuring the successful implementation of each protocol on the unit. This nursing role provides each new investigator with a clinical nurse liaison for the planning and coordination of their study. CRC nurses are highly skilled in a variety of special techniques needed to assist in clinical research studies. One of the goals of this CRC nursing staff is to provide the greatest level of clinical expertise in a variety of clinical specialties. This diverse and expert clinical research nursing staff provide services for over 150 protocols with Primary Investigators coming from all departments in the Medical Center and all four schools on campus.

If you are seeking diversity, the challenge of implementing cutting edge clinical research studies, working with internally known & Nobel Prize winning researchers, the opportunity to learn to conduct your own nursing research, this CRC is the place for you!

Clinical Research Center - Pediatric

The pediatric Clinical Research Center (CRC) at UCSF Children’s Hospital, located on the 6th floor of Moffitt Hospital, is a discrete, multidisciplinary, five-bed patient care unit with a separate adjacent outpatient clinic. The PCRC is staffed by professional research nurses and skilled medical personnel.
Outpatient studies represent both a continuation of inpatient protocols as well as separate protocols, which are conducted solely in the outpatient setting. Off-center research beds, known as scatter beds, along with specialized critical care clinical research nurses accommodate research studies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Pediatric intensive care unit, and pediatric cardiac intensive care unit.
The goals and functions of this CRC include the following:

  1. to expand medical knowledge of both normal and abnormal physiology at a whole cell and molecular level
  2. to develop new methods of treatment through medical research
Presently, research on the center is being carried out under 98 diverse protocols. Research protocols are approved by the Committee on Human Research and by the CRC Advisory Committee. The specialized personnel and other resources available at the CRC facilitate clinical research for both investigators and research subjects.
