Clinical Ladder
The Department of Nursing at the UCSF Medical Center has a clinical ladder in place for nurses across the inpatient and outpatient setting. The ladder reflects clinical and leadership experience/expertise and includes Clinical Nurse I through Clinical Nurse IV’s practicing at the bedside. Requirements for these positions are as follows:
- CN I: Less then 6 months equivalent of clinic nursing experience
- CN II: 6 months or more of clinical nursing experience
- CN III: Meets/exceeds CN II expectations and is recognized as a leader and clinical resource in their respective practice/unit, achieved through promotional process
- CN IV: Exceeds CN III expectations and is recognized as a leader and clinical resource in their respective practice/unit, achieved through promotional process
The promotion process for the CN III and CN IV positions entails candidates to put together a portfolio or binder with reference letters and evidence of project(s), leadership/professional activities and goals and to interview with a departmental Promotion Committee. The clinical ladder is a way to acknowledge the experience, expertise and contributions of our clinical nursing staff.
