Nursing Education and Professional Development

Overview

The UCSF Nursing Education Department offers over 100 classes each year on a wide variety of topics and several regional professional conferences. Speakers are drawn from our own highly qualified nursing and physician staff, as well as other local bay area experts and world-renowned UCSF School of Nursing Faculty. Our goal is to promote the high quality and continuing professional development of nurses and other patient care staff, so our continuing education classes charge only a nominal fee to cover expenses, or are often free to UCSF employees. Detailed information about course offerings can be found here.

In addition to promoting continuing professional development through continuing education, the Nursing Education Department also:

  • Coordinates all new graduate, specialty training programs and new hire orientation activities for the nursing divisions and units.
  • Develops competency based training materials and computer assisted self-learning modules.
  • Provides customized annual safety education for Department of Nursing patient care areas reviewing unit specific high-risk procedures and skills; infection control and environmental health and safety information.

Nurse Educator staff are master’s prepared with diverse clinical backgrounds, and practical experience in the field of education and training. Staff represent all areas of inpatient nursing including perioperative, pediatric acute care, pediatric critical care, adult acute care and adult critical care.
