BLOODBORNE PATHOGEN STANDARD

The Medical Center has a Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure Control Plan to protect all staff from exposures to blood and body fluid exposures as mandated by the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen Standard. The plan includes, but is not limited to, the use of Standard Precautions, Work Practice and Engineering Controls. It is contained in the Environment of Care Manual located at:

http://manuals.ucsfmedicalcenter.org/EOC/index.shtml

The Bloodborne Pathogen Standard protects health care workers who are “at risk” of occupational exposure to diseases that may be transmitted by blood including HIV, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C. Exposure may occur through accidental needle stick or other sharps injuries with contaminated items, or less commonly through skin contact or mucous membrane contact with blood or body fluids.
