Training Programs Descriptions
Adult Acute Care Training Program This program is for new graduate nurses and RNs with less than six months experience in the acute care setting who are interested in working on the acute medical-surgical patient care units. This is a wonderful opportunity to develop your expertise in any of the following specialties:
- Cardiology/Cardiac Surgery 10 CVT is a 36-bed telemetry unit with both surgery and medical patients. Surgical procedures include heart and lung transplants, valve replacement, vascular reconstruction and CABG. Cardiology patients include MI, CHF and cardiomyopathy. This is a fast-paced, high acuity unit with many opportunities for learning.
- Neurosurgery/Neurology 8 Long houses our neuro patient population and includes complex neuro spine surgeries in addition to brain surgeries. You will have the opportunity to learn neuro telemetry for our seizure patient population and to work with many rare neurological diseases. UCSF is a major neuroscience referral center and is a Center for Excellence in Neuro.
- Transplant 9 Long is the unit where all of the kidney, pancreas, and liver transplants are cared for. UCSF is a Center for Excellence in Transplant Surgery, performing over 200 transplants a year.
- Oncology/Immunology 11 Long provides highly specialized care to patients with oncology and hematology disorders including leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma and solid tumors. Bone marrow transplants and radiation implants are also cared for on this unit. The UCSF Comprehensive Cancer Center is internationally recognized and a leader in the implementation of the latest protocols for cancer treatment.
- Orthopedics/Abdominal Surgery 12 Long is a fast-paced, challenging unit providing care for our major abdominal surgery and orthopedic surgery patients. Major abdominal surgeries include hepatectomy, colectomy, Whipple procedures and pancreatectomy. Orthopedic surgeries include joint replacement, oncology and sports medicine.
- General Medicine 14 Long is a busy, dynamic general medicine unit providing care for a wide variety of diagnoses. Many of the patients are elderly and present with a myriad of chronic illnesses in addition to the acute condition causing hospitalization. Providing care is challenging and rewarding and there is an opportunity to work with and become part of the Geriatric Resource Nurse team.
- Medical/Surgical Transitional Unit 14 M has a patient population mix which includes 12 beds for transitional care devoted to medical and surgical patients and 20 beds devoted to non-transitional medical-surgical patients. Most of the beds have telemetry capability. High acuity, telemetry and a general med-surg population make this unit a challenging and rewarding place to work. New staff will attend a tailored Critical Care Training Program (see below).
- General Clinical Research Center 12 Moffitt (GCRC) is partially funded by the NIH and is the center for much of the patient research done at the Medical Center. The unit participates in numerous and diverse research studies, both with inpatients and outpatients. Studies include healthy volunteers and research protocols for patients with a diagnosis. Anyone interested in research will find this a most exciting place to work. Staff on this unit work 8-hour shifts.
- Surgery Oncology 5N on the Mt. Zion campus, near the Comprehensive Cancer Center, provides care to oncology patients undergoing surgery. Surgeries include abdominal, head and neck, gynecology and urology.
- Short Stay Surgical Unit 4E on the Mt. Zion campus specializes in the care of the patient who requires a limited stay following surgery. Common surgeries seen on this unit include thyroidectomies, plastic surgery, gynecology and urology. Staff on this unit work 8-hour and 12-hour shifts.
