Nursing Performance Improvement
The Nursing Performance Improvement Department plays a pivotal role in two of the chief aims of the Department of Nursing at UCSF Medical Center and UCSF Children’s Hospital: ensuring patient safety and improving the high quality of care we deliver to our patients.
Nursing PI is committed to achieving these goals through providing resources in five major focus areas:
- Communication – monthly bulletins, clinical newsletter, toolkits for managers, best practices and posters
- Analysis – incident reports, nursing dashboard, documentation audits, prevalence studies, committee support, ongoing monitoring of clinical indicators, measurement of nursing-sensitive outcomes
- PI projects – unit-based performance improvement projects, participation in medical center quality improvement
- External – participation in ongoing data collection and pilot projects with the California Nursing Outcomes Coalition, the National Database for Nursing Quality Indicators, and the University Health System Consortium
- Regulatory – lead role in ensuring compliance with The Joint Commission Provision of Care standards and conducting The Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goal audit
