Ambulatory Surgery Center at Parnassus

ASC staff members Overview

The Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) is an out-patient surgery center for adult and pediatric patients undergoing surgical or diagnostic procedures. Patients treated here are in good general health. After their surgery or procedure, they can either be safely discharged home or transferred to Moffitt or Long Hospital for overnight observation.

The ASC is located on the Plaza Level of the Ambulatory Care Center at 400 Parnassus Avenue. It is divided into two separate but dependent areas - the Operating Room (OR) and the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU). There is a reception area, four operating rooms, procedure rooms, exam rooms, recovery beds and other recovery areas. The Center is open Monday through Friday, from 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., or until the last patient is either discharged home or transferred to Moffitt/Long Hospital.

Patient Care

The ASC is jointly managed by the Department of Nursing and the Department of Anesthesia. The Department of Anesthesia provides a medical director, and a physician from that department is available at all times. Nursing staff includes a patient care manager and assistant managers, registered nurses, technicians, hospital assistants, and administrative support staff - select ASC Nursing for further information.

An individualized plan of care is developed for each patient. Patients may receive general anesthesia, regional anesthesia, local anesthesia, or local anesthesia with sedation. Staff members work together to care for, educate and support the patients and families, and are sensitive to their ethnic and social background. Technical knowledge and personalized care are blended together to meet the pre-, intra-, and post-operative needs of each patient.
