Children's Surgery Center
Overview
The Childrens Surgery Center is located on the fourth floor of Moffitt-Long Hospital within the Operating Room complex. It consists of a waiting room, a two-bed pre-operative unit, a four-bed post-anesthesia unit, and two operating room suites especially designed for children. Children come to the Center for many different surgical procedures. Often they are referred here from other parts of the United States or from other countries because of the highly specialized, state-of-the-art care provided at the Center.
Family Centered Care for Children
Handling the sick child requires a special approach at every age, from birth to adolescence. The Children's Surgery Center provides this special approach. Center physicians and nurses are trained specifically in the care of children ranging in age from infants to teens. Every effort is taken to make the children as comfortable and free of pain as possible during every stage of their care.
The Center practices family centered care. This means:
- Plans and goals for the surgery and hospital or home care after the surgery are discussed with the patient and the family.
- Children are able to have their parents, brothers and sisters, and other loved ones with them until they go into surgery and also during the recovery period directly after surgery.
After children recover from anesthesia, they are either discharged to home or admitted to a bed on one of the pediatric floors in our hospital.
