Endoscopy Centers
Overview
There are two Endoscopy Centers at the UCSF Medical Center - one at the Parnassus site in Long Hospital and one at Mount Zion Hospital. The Endoscopy Center at Parnassus serves both outpatients and hospitalized patients of all ages, while the Endoscopy Center at Mount Zion is for adult patients only. Physicians from Radiology, Medicine, Pediatrics and Surgery practice Endoscopy here, and medical direction is within the Department of Medicine. The centers are administered by the Department of Nursing - see Endoscopy Nursing for further information.
Most endoscopic procedures involve inserting an illuminated instrument into the interior of the body. The instrument is connected to an optical system that allows the examiner to obtain a view of the part of the body being illuminated. An example of an endoscopic procedure is a colonoscopy in which the colon is examined.
Endoscopy Center at Mount Zion
The Endoscopy Center at Mount Zion has four fully equipped procedure rooms. The unit admits patients and they also spend their recovery time here. It is open from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Pediatric procedures and procedures which may require admission to the hospital are not performed at this center but are performed at the Endoscopy Center at Parnassus. The majority of procedures involve the administration of a sedative to relax the patient. Procedures performed include colonoscopy (examination of the colon), flexible sigmoidoscopy (examination of rectum and adjacent colon), bronchoscopy (examination of lung areas), esophago-gastro-duodenoscopy (EGD for short - examination of gullet to upper intestine), percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube placement (PEG for short - stomach tube for feeding), paracentesis (drawing off of excess fluid), and liver biopsy (removal of small piece of tissue for examination).
Endoscopy Center at Parnassus
The Endoscopy Center at Parnassus is located in Long Hospital. It has four fully equipped procedure rooms and a treatment room used for liver biopsies and other unsedated procedures. There is a six-bed observation area in the unit used for the admission and recovery of patients. Procedures are scheduled from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Add-on procedures may be performed between 2 and 4 p.m.
The center treats both outpatients and hospitalized patients all ages who require endoscopic procedures and invasive procedures requiring specialized equipment, supplies, and care. The majority of procedures involve the administration of a sedative to relax the patient. One to two days per month, pediatric procedures are scheduled with general anesthesia. In addition to the procedures performed at Mount Zion (see above), the Endoscopy Center at Parnassus performs endoscopic ultrasound.
