Moffitt-Long Operating Room

RN in OR with medical supplies Overview

The Operating Room (OR) at UCSF Medical Center is located on the 4th floor of the adjacent Moffitt and Long Hospitals. It has a total of 22 operating rooms - 10 in Moffitt and 12 in Long. The OR is located next to the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) which cares for patients directly after surgery.

Two of the operating rooms are pediatric operating rooms with their own pediatric induction area and a pediatric PACU.

Patient Care

UCSF is a teaching and research hospital that uses numerous advanced, state-of-the-art techniques. As a consequence, patients are referred here from throughout the country and the world. Care is given to patients of all ages, and includes fetal procedures.

The OR is staffed at all times. Surgeries are regularly scheduled Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. through 6:00 p.m., but urgent and emergency cases may be added at any time with proper approval. Staff members include surgeons and other physicians, registered nurses, technicians, and patient care assistants.

Complex surgical procedures are routinely performed. The different surgical specialties include cardiocthoracic (heart/chest) surgery, ophthalmology (eye), otorhinolaryngology (ear/nose/throat), maxillofacial (face/jaws) surgery, plastic surgery, general surgery, gynecology, genitourinary (reproductive/excretory systems) surgery, neurosurgery, orthopedics (bones/joints), pediatrics, transplant surgery, and vascular surgery. During surgery, patients may also receive services from other disciplines such as diagnostic urology, perfusion, radiology, radiation oncology, or the blood bank.

At least one Registered Nurse (RN) is assigned to each operating room during surgery and is always available to assess, plan, implement and evaluate the nursing care given to the patient. In some surgeries, two or three RNs may be assigned to the operating room. Operating room RNs develop an individualized plan of care for each patient. For more information, see Nursing in the OR.
