UCSF JBI Centre for Evidence Synthesis and Implementation 2021 UCSF Internal JBI Evidence Implementation Application
Program Purpose
This six-month program is designed for nurse clinicians, managers, educators, and researchers who want to explore strategies that promote effective evidence implementation. Two week-long intensive workshops will be conducted at the UCSF JBI Centre for Synthesis and Implementation in San Francisco, California. In the intervening months between the workshops, participants will create and launch an Evidence Implementation Project at their home institution. Participants must have access to a clinical site for their implementation project.
This program offers participants guided opportunities to explore the literature and to acquire skills in the JBI Practice Application of Clinical Evidence Systems (PACES) and Getting Research into Practice (GRIP) software. The program culminates with the publication of each participant’s Evidence Implementation Report in the JBI journal. Successful completion of this program entitles participants to become certified JBI Evidence Implementation Fellows.
The overall objectives of this program are to:
- Describe critical elements of evidence implementation, namely: develop a project protocol; master PACES and GRIP JBI software; lead and evaluate an evidence implementation project at one’s home institution; and disseminate project findings through manuscript writing and dissemination.
- Apply leadership skills that are necessary to implement and sustain a successful evidence implementation project.
- Develop participants’ analytical thinking and writing skills that can improve patient, family, and system outcomes.
- Demonstrate professional growth and development.

Program Funding and Resource Allocation
The UCSF JBI Evidence Implementation program is free to all UCSF Nursing Staff (FTE >0.7), as funding allows. Participant in the Evidence Implementation program will receive 45 contact hours (CEs) at the conclusion of the two-week program, in addition to course materials and lunch on each workshop day.
Funding for the UCSF JBI Evidence Implementation program will be shared between the UCSF Center for Nursing Excellence and Innovation (formerly known as the Institute for Nursing Excellence) and the Evidence Implementation fellow's home unit. Fellows will be entitled to float their training time for the two-week workshops to the Center for Nursing Excellence and Innovation and recharge up to 12 hours/month to the Center for the duration of the fellowship (April 26 – October 29, 2021). The time will allow for the Fellow to work on their evidence implementation project, as well as any Clinical Coach time that is required. Additional time for the project may be needed. This time is to be negotiated with your manager. Project time is considered time in lieu of - not in addition to—time worked. Evidence Implementation fellows who have successfully completed the program will receive their medallion at the annual Clinical Inquiry Conference in January/February 2022.

- It is anticipated that each fellow’s project may take up to 12 additional hours/month during the six-month program. This time will be paid for by the fellow’s unit. Actual schedules will be negotiated between Unit Director, Clinical Coach, and Fellow on a month-to-month basis based on the scope of work that needs to be accomplished. Projects that extend beyond the six-month time frame must be approved in advance by the Clinical Coach and the Clinical Nurse Researcher.
- Typically, didactics are six hours and six additional hours for these months will be time funded by the Center for Nursing Excellence and Innovation. These additional six hours may be used for other training activities, meetings with your coach, literature review, project development and implementation, and project evaluation.
- It is anticipated that each fellow’s project may take up to 6 additional hours/month after the six-month program. This time will be paid for by the Center for Nursing Excellence and Innovation. Note that projects that extend beyond the six-month time frame must be approved in advance by the Clinical Coach and the Clinical Nurse Researcher.
