Click here to nominate a colleague for the Distinguished Nurse Award

Award Criteria: The nominee’s project will be identified by colleagues, or other health professionals, as exemplary in one or more of the following areas:

  1. The significance of the problem addressed by the nurse’s project or approach to nursing practice, leadership or education.

  2. The creativity and innovation shown in the nurse’s project or approach.

  3. The effectiveness of the methods used by the nurse to implement the project / approach.

  4. The quality of the evaluation conducted or planned by the nurse for assessment of the outcomes of the project or approach.

  5. The degree to which beneficial outcomes from the project or approach have been evidenced in the nurse’s setting.

  6. The applicability of the project or approach for improving practice in other settings.

The Award for Excellence in Acute & Transitional Care Nursing is presented annually to a professional nurse who is actively engaged in the practice of Adult or Pediatric Acute or Transitional Care nursing within UCSF Health.  The recipient's contribution to the care of patients in the Acute or Transitional care setting demonstrates such exemplary practice as to merit recognition from peers and other professional colleagues.

The Award for Excellence in Advanced Practice Nursing is presented annually to an Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) who is actively engaged in the practice of Advanced Practice nursing at UCSF Health.  The APN’s contribution to the care of patients demonstrates such exemplary practice as to merit recognition from peers and other professional colleagues. This award can recognize an APN in any of the four roles: Clinical Nurse Specialist, Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Anesthetist, or Certified Nurse Midwife.

The Award for Excellence in Ambulatory and Home Health Nursing is presented annually to a professional nurse who is actively engaged in the practice of Ambulatory or Home Health Nursing within the Medical Center at UCSF Health.  The recipient's contribution to the care of patients in the Ambulatory and Home Health setting demonstrates such exemplary practice as to merit recognition from peers and other professional colleagues.

The Clifford K. and Avola Wilson Memorial Excellence in Critical Care Nursing Award is presented annually to a professional nurse who is actively engaged in the practice of Critical Care nursing within UCSF Health.  The recipient's contribution to the care of patients in the critical care setting demonstrates such exemplary practice as to merit recognition from peers and other professional colleagues.

The Colleague of Nursing Award recognizes a colleague in healthcare who demonstrates a commitment to improved patient care through collaboration, and support of nursing. The recipient’s contribution to the nursing care of patients demonstrates such exemplary practice as to merit recognition from peers and other professional colleagues.

In recognition of the value that UCSF Health Department of Nursing places on our community partnerships and on the community volunteering done by nurses, the Department is pleased to offer the Community Volunteer Service Nursing Award. This award recognizes a professional nurse who gives back to the community through volunteer work. The recipient’s work should have a positive impact on the community and merit recognition from peers and other professional colleagues.

The Award for Excellence in Nursing Mentorship and Leadership recognizes a professional nurse who has made an outstanding contribution within UCSF Medical Center and/or UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital. This awardee, in the execution of various professional activities in leadership and mentoring roles, displays professionalism through effective communication of the vision and mission of professional nursing; advocacy and support for patients and staff; and initiation or accomplishment of innovations and initiatives towards the advancement of nursing. The recipient’s leadership qualities demonstrate such exemplary practice as to merit recognition from peers and other professional colleagues.

The Award for Excellence in Perinatal Nursing is presented annually to a professional nurse who is actively engaged in the practice of Perinatal Nursing within the Medical Center at UCSF and/or UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital. The recipient's contribution to the care of patients in the Perinatal setting demonstrates such exemplary practice as to merit recognition from peers and other professional colleagues.

The recipient's contribution to the care of neurological, neurosurgical patients demonstrates such exemplary practice as to merit recognition from peers and other professional colleagues.

The recipient's contribution to the care of Oncology patients is patient/family-centered and demonstrates such exemplary practice as to merit recognition from peers and other professional colleagues.
