Providing an Education Program to Nursing Staff to Increase Confidence in Providing Discharge Education

By TSANG Yuen Yee, Jenny, RN, BSc (Nursing), MNurs, Ward 12F (General Male Ward)

Purpose

The purpose of study is to enhance the confidence level of nurses in providing a discharge education to patients in order to improve the quality of discharge patient education and to reduce the numbers of inquiry calls from discharged patients.

Background

Enquiry calls are making nurses nervous and time consuming. Patients should feel better when they are well informed at the time of discharge. The current discharge plan in HKSH are using nursing care oriented approach, not diagnostic oriented. Discharge education content may be vary or insufficient.

Post PCI patients have high and different information needs due to short hospital stay. (Ala, 2017) and most of them are satisfied with the technical treatment, but not receiving adequate instruction and information. (Valaker et al., 2017)  Moreover, Nolan & McKee (2016) identified post-PCI patients as a priority for further targeted education to reduce readmission rate. Furthermore, There are some patients who skipped medication and lead to death or heart attack in US, Taiwan, as well as in Hong Kong. Thus, discharge education is important in post PCI patient.

Picking post PCI cases should be a good start for developing a discharge education content list with education session to increase the confidence of nurses.

Methods

Provide an education program to nurses in ward 12F with a discharge education content list, FAQ sheet and common types of cardiac medication information sheet. PCI discharge education content list will be used as a reminder in post PCI patients discharge education in order to maintain the quality of discharge education by nurses.

Questionnaire was designed with self-rating  by Likert scale on confidence level and self perception on their knowledge. Data was collected before and after the education program in order to compare the effectiveness of the education program.

Results

The project proved that providing an education program could enhances the confidence level and increases knowledge on nursing staff to deliver discharge education on post-PCI patients.

Discussion

Education program could help nursing staff to deliver a higher quality patient discharge education on post-PCI patients. Collecting the numbers of phone calls from discharge patients, staff and patient satisfaction survey will be more promising. The education program should be introduced to other wards in HKSH and the discharge education content list should become a routine practice to increase post-PCI patient satisfaction.

Furthermore, the concept of providing education content list with education program to nurses should be extended to other types of cases such as post-TURP patient in order to improve the overall quality of discharge education in hospital.
