On Saturday, June 18, 2011, Mount Zion will celebrate 100 years with a special event, “UCSF / Mount Zion Campus Community Health Day" which will commemorate this wonderful milestone with a day-long street fair open to the public.
The day starts with the 100th anniversary celebration of the Hellman Building (located at the intersection of Post and Scott streets), which was the former Mount Zion Hospital. An invitation only breakfast reception will be held for Mount Zion Alumni, (including former doctors, nurses, administrators, board members, and Auxiliary members) descendants of Isaias Hellman, UCSF executive management, major donors to the Mount Zion campus and government officials.
Mount Zion, which became part of UCSF in 1990, has a long and memorable legacy of providing healthcare to the community it has served and has instilled a deep sense of pride in the staff who have worked there over many years. For example, Laurie Anonas, Patient Care Manager of the Adult Surgical / Oncology unit (5 North), who has been at Mount Zion for 38 years, fondly remembers her years here and is still inspired to work with her colleagues who are committed to providing excellent patient care. Though she has seen many changes throughout her career during this time, she acknowledges the unique “family” atmosphere amongst staff at Mount Zion that has been and remains a hallmark.
Another nurse, Birgitta Akesson, RN, CNOR in the OR, who came to Mount Zion in 1970 from Sweden (and thought she would stay for a year!) recounts how impressed she has been to see the outreach provided by the staff to the patients and community on countless occasions. She will always remember the “deep and sincere caring for patients and each other” that she experiences while working here to this day.
Following the breakfast event, there will be a day-long street fair on Post Street (closed between Divisadero and Scott), open to the public, which will offer free health-related screenings, educational materials and activities, music, kid’s activities and food from local restaurants.
